May 29, 2011

On Sunday, May 29, 2011 at approximately 1:00 p.m. Boone County Sheriff's deputies were called to the 7400 block of Ridge Edge Court near Florence, Kentucky to investigate the discovery (by a family member) of the deaths of a married couple in their home.

The couple (names withheld) were last heard from on Friday the 27th and when they failed to attend church services this morning a member of the family went to their home to check on their well being.

Sheriff’s investigators are not speculating how the couple died but are investigating the scene completely to ensure nothing is overlooked.  No other information concerning the case is being released at this point so as not to jeopardize the investigation.

Update Monday, May 30, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. – The victims are identified as William & Peggy Stephenson both 74 years old of the 7400 block of Ridge Edge Court near Florence, Kentucky.  We are investigating this as a double homicide at this point.

Update Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. As the complex investigation develops, detectives have obtained a photo of a man they are hoping to identify from the T.A. (Travel Centers of America) Truck Stop located in the 7700 block of Burlington Pike in Florence, Kentucky.  The man was seen speaking with Bill Stephenson on Friday, May 27, 2011 there at the truck stop.  At this point he is considered a person of interest who might provide us insight since he could be one of the last people to speak to Bill.  Anyone who can provide information is asked to call the Boone County Sheriff’s Department tip line at (859) 334–3500 or Crime Stoppers at (513) 352–3040.

Update Friday, June 24, 2011 at 10:00 a.m.  We have identified the man in the photo from the truck stop (see previous update).  He contacted the Meriwether County, Georgia Sheriff’s Office yesterday morning after he learned we were looking for him.  He was very cooperative and submitted to an interview with those Georgia authorities.  While I am not prepared to release his identity, he is a truck driver who was contacted by an acquaintance who saw his picture on television here locally.

That press release seemed to spur renewed interest in the case among the public who have provided us additional leads not connected with photo.  We encourage anyone who thinks they might have information concerning the case to contact the Sheriff’s tip line at (859) 334–3500 or Crime Stoppers at (513) 352–3040.

Update on Friday, July 22, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Investigators have identified Sherman D. (also goes by Dwayne) Angel, 48, a transient, as someone who had been seen with Bill Stephenson at the truck stop. Angel holds a Arizona drivers license but is believed to be in the area due to a July 20th arrest/release in Kenton County, Kentucky and who was in this area Memorial Day weekend.

Angel is considered a witness who needs to be interviewed to determine if he can provide information concerning the Stephenson homicides. Anyone with information as to Angel's whereabouts is asked to call either the Boone County Sheriff's Tip Line at (859) 334-3500 or Crime Stoppers at (513) 352-3040.

Update on Friday, July 22, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. Sherman Angel has been located. He called in to the office when he heard we were looking for him. Detectives are speaking to him as of this writing.

Update on Monday, September 12, 2011 at 3:00 p.m.  Investigators are asking for the person who called in a tip to the Shelbyville, Kentucky Police Department late last week to call them directly.  Shelbyville Police passed on what information was given to them but our detectives would like to speak to the person to obtain more specific information.  The caller provided a name but there happen to be four people with the same name residing in Kentucky.  We are not concerned with the caller’s identity, just in the information he or she could provide.  Please call (859) 334–2175 or the afterhours tip line at (859) 334–3500.
