On Friday, April 13, 2018, at 10:48 p.m. a single vehicle collision on Mt. Zion Road (KY 536) near Hempsteade Drive in Union, Kentucky (Boone County) claimed the life of the driver.

A 2004 Acura MDX, operated by Bryan Hammon, 50, of Florence, Kentucky, was traveling eastbound on Mt. Zion Road just prior to Hempsteade Drive.  Hammon’s vehicle exited the roadway off the right side into the ditch/embankment for an unknown reason where it continued to drive eastbound for approximately 222 feet.  Hammon’s vehicle then crossed Hempsteade Drive and continued off the roadway for approximately 255 feet until it reached a small pond adjacent to the Hempsteade subdivision entrance. Hammon’s vehicle then continued into the small pond where it became completely submerged according to witnesses, and later confirmed by arriving Boone County Sheriff Deputies.

Members of the Union Fire Department, Boone County Water Rescue, and the Northern Kentucky Technical Rescue Team responded to the scene for the rescue and recovery.  Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Hammon was pronounced deceased at the scene.  Rescue crews searched the pond and confirmed Hammon was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Unit is handling the investigation trying to determine the initial cause of the collision.  The investigation is extremely preliminary and it is unknown at this time if intoxication or speed were factors.  Next of kin has been notified.  The roadway and scene reopened to traffic at approximately 03:10 a.m.
