On Monday, July 28, 2008 at approximately 6:25 p.m. a traffic collision on I–71 at the 76 mile marker in Walton, Kentucky between a pickup truck and a semi claimed the life of the driver of the pickup truck.
A 50 year old Sparta, Kentucky woman (deceased) was driving a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 southbound when she apparently lost control and started through the emergency turn around, into the median, and then struck the northbound semi just behind the driver’s door ripping into the fuel tank. The impact caused the rig to skid sideward in a counter clockwise rotation (nearly 180º) and into the median where it overturned. The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. The tractor–trailer was driven by Lachezar Strelkov, 33 of Windsor, Ontario. Strelkov refused medical treatment. The truck is owned by UTL Transportation Services out of Mississauga, Ontario. The semi was hauling 41,680 pounds of plastic powder from Louisville, Kentucky to Windsor, Ontario.
The accident originally caused the entire interstate to be closed for nearly an hour. Currently there is one lane in each direction open while crews work on stopping the leaking diesel fuel. The accident is being investigated by the Boone County Sheriff’s Department Accident Reconstruction Team.
