December 14, 2009
On Sunday, December 13, 2009 at approximately 10:00 p.m. a reported drug deal/robbery involving four (4) men left one of them stabbed in the back and eventually landed all of them in jail.
According to investigators, three (3) friends, Ben Chapman, 19 of Walton, Kentucky, Mark Chitwood, 19 of Union, Kentucky, and Abdula Obied, 19 of Burlington, Kentucky conspired to rob James Baker, 19 of Union, Kentucky of five (5) OxyContin tablets.
It started with Chapman texting Baker arranging for the purchase of the tablets and the meeting location on Whispering Trail in Union, Kentucky. Chitwood and Obied were to be in hiding nearby and rush Baker when he produced the drugs. Baker, on the other hand, felt like something was amiss so he took a kitchen knife with him.
When Baker arrived on foot, Chitwood – who was hiding behind a tree – approached as planned. Baker stabbed Chitwood in the back and left the scene. The three abandoned their plan and went their separate ways not bothering to seek medical attention for Chitwood.
Baker’s mother brought him to report the incident. After rounding up everyone involved and interviewing them, Detective Bruce McVay charged each of the three with Robbery 2nd degree and Baker with Assault 2nd degree. All three were lodged in the Boone County Detention Center. No bail was set as of this writing.
