On Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at approximately 12:15 a.m. a four vehicle collision on westbound I–275 at the 3.3 mile marker sent four occupants to area hospitals, one with reported life–threatening injuries.
Traffic was at or near a standstill due to construction on the roadway when Garry Robinson, 51 of Petersburg, Kentucky driving a 2008 GMC Savana van failed to slow and ran into the rear of Dale, 54 & Denise, 51 Shell of Covington, Kentucky in a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. That impact caused the Impala to ram a 1985 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck operated by Charles Centers Jr., 21 of Burlington, Kentucky which, in turn, pushed the Silverado into the rear of a tractor trailer driven by Okey Rodgers II, 35 of Columbus, Ohio and owned by DIST–trans also out of Columbus.
Dale Shell was transported via Air Care to University Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio with severe head injuries. His wife, Denise, Garry Robinson, and Charles Centers were taken to Saint Elizabeth Hospital (Florence) where they were treated and released.
First responders had the entire interstate closed for nearly an hour and then a restricted use until 3:40 a.m. The collision is being investigated by the Boone County Sheriff’s Department Accident Reconstruction Unit.
