On Friday, September 8, 2017, at 10:13 p.m. a vehicle vs. pedestrian traffic collision on U.S. Highway 42 at the intersection of Old Union Road in Union, Kentucky claimed the life of the involved pedestrian.
A 2017 Ford Fusion, operated by Steven Hoersting, 64, of Union, Kentucky, was traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 42 just north of Old Union Road towards Florence, KY when he struck Eric Brown, 36, of Burlington, KY. After impact Brown was thrown from the vehicle coming to rest in the middle of the roadway. Hoersting was able to stop his vehicle a short distance after the initial collision, however, was blocking both eastbound lanes of travel.
Brown was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Florence, KY where he was pronounced deceased upon arrival. Hoersting was not injured in the collision and refused medical treatment at the scene.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Unit is handling the investigation. No charges have been filed at this time and Hoersting is cooperating with the investigation. Brown was not in a crosswalk and crossing against traffic in an unlit area. It is unknown at this time why Brown was attempting to cross the road. Hoersting was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision and speed/intoxication are not believed to be factors. Next of kin have been notified. U.S. Highway 42 eastbound was closed for approximately three (3) hours however the roadway has since reopened.
