Agencies
We have information on several environmental agencies. If you'd like to volunteer your time or money to one of these agencies or simply want to find out more about them, please call our office. There is also a payroll deduction campaign available for your workplace called Earth Share. Environmental agencies can use your help!
Antifreeze Recycling
What: Boone County will recycle antifreeze for use in county fleet vehicles!
Where: Public Works Dept., 5645 Idlewild Rd. , Burlington
When: Between the hours of 8:00 am & 3:00 pm , Monday - Friday.
Please make sure the antifreeze is not contaminated with other substances. Antifreeze generated from businesses will NOT be accepted.
Appliance Recycling
What: Scrap metal & large appliances (known as white goods). We accept refrigerators, washers, dryers, water heaters, ranges, dishwashers, room air conditioners and furnaces.
Where: Public Works Dept., 5645 Idlewild Rd. , Burlington
When: Between the hours of 7:30 am & 4:00 pm Monday - Friday
Batteries (Auto & Ni-Cd)
Batteries are another no-no for the landfill. Bluegrass Recycling in Burlington will take your auto batteries for recycling. It is located at 5756 Limaburg Rd. Call for days and hours of operation ( 283-9560 ). Ni-Cd drop-off locations include: Ameritech Cellular ( Mall Rd. ), Circuit City ( Mall Rd. ), Pete 's PhotoWorld, Inc. ( Connector Drive ), Radio Shack (Florence Mall), Sun TV ( Mall Rd. ), and Wal-Mart ( Houston Rd. ).
Christmas Tree Recycling
When: 2nd week in January (exact dates, times and drop off locations will be announced in December).
Where: Public Works offers both curbside pick up and drop off options. Drop Off locations include Flicks Foods in Burlington , Ewing Drive in Florence and Walton Park .
Composting
Composting is EASY! You can compost any plant, fruit and vegetable matter, as well as tea bags and eggshells (no animal meats or fats, please). Remember to leave your grass clippings on your lawn! If you're thinking about burning yard waste, please call our office -- there are strict regulations on burning. Watch for our new Compost Education Site at the new Charlie England Park !
Illegal Dumping - Litter Hotline
Has someone dumped on your property or have you seen any dumpsites in the County? Not only is this unhealthy, unsightly and costly, it's also ILLEGAL! If you see someone dumping or spot a dump in our County, please call our office or leave a message at 859-334-3151 . Keep Boone County Beautiful -- WE CARE! We also need your help to eliminate litter. Show your support by displaying our new window sticker! Call Mary to receive your FREE sticker and litterbag today! Watch for new road signs which were designed by children in our Boone County schools.
Junk Vehicle Program
Got an old junk vehicle you'd like to get rid of? We work with the Izaak Walton League to remove that old eyesore from your property. The vehicle is handled in an environmentally responsible manner at no cost to you! Please call our office to schedule a pick-up day for your junk vehicle!
Phone Book Recycling
When: Every June and July ONLY
Residents:
Curbside: Those who participate in curbside recycling through Rumpke can place their outdated telephone books in their curbside bin.
Drop-Box: Those who use the recycling drop box program may place their directories in the paper-side of the bin.
Drop-Off: You can also drop directories off at the Cincinnati Bell Retail store at the Florence Mall during normal business hours.
Businesses: Companies with more than 200 directories in need of pickup should call the Cincinnati Bell Recycling Hotline at 397-1897 . Leave a message and someone will call you back to make arrangements for pickup. Businesses with less than 200 directories can drop off their books at the Cincinnati Bell warehouse on Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m through Labor Day.
Paint Waste Disposal & Recycling
Liquid paint waste cannot go into our landfill, but hardened paint waste can! Simply take off the lid to let the paint harden. If this process needs speeding up, just add kitty litter or sawdust. Sometimes, there are organizations that take used paint to help the needy spruce up their homes. Call our office if you have additional questions about paint waste and household hazardous waste.
Recycling (Aluminum, Bi-Metal, Glass, Paper, Cardboard)
What: Newspaper, Plastic #1 & #2 (look on the bottom of the container), Food & Beverage Cans (aluminum, tin & steel), Glass (all colors), Cardboard, Paper Grocery Sacks & Magazines.
Where: Maplewood Ball Field at the intersection of Barney 's Road and Idlewild Road (just past the BC Fairgrounds), Airport Sound Insulation Demonstration House, 3644 Limaburg Road (near the intersection of Conner Road ), Florence Public Services ( 7850 Tanners Lane ), Petersburg Community Center , Ryle High School (behind stadium), Walton City Building , & Belleview-McVille Fire Station ( 6900 McVille Road , western Boone County )
How: Please remember to WASH & SQUASH and no lids on plastic or glass. Also, no plastic bags of any kind, please! We do NOT accept phone books, junk mail or paperboard (that means slick types of cardboard like cereal boxes, six pack holders, etc.) or any other type of material other than what is stipulated above. "Off items" constitute contamination!
Special Events
Upcoming events will be announced and more are being planned right now! Our Spring & Fall Clean Up Programs offer citizens disposal options to help with their "Spring & Fall Cleaning!" The Ohio River Sweep in the summer is an annual clean up of the banks of the Ohio River . Earth Day makes April a special time in environmental awareness. More exciting events are being planned now!
Used Oil Recycling
What: Boone County recycles used oil by burning it in our waste oil furnaces.
When: Between the hours of 8:00 am & 3:00 pm , Monday - Friday.
Where: Public Works Dept., 5645 Idlewild Rd. , Burlington
How: Please make sure the oil is not contaminated with other substances such as bleach, paint, thinner, gasoline, etc. Oil is accepted in no larger than a 5-gallon container. Used oil generated from businesses will NOT be accepted.
