The animals available for adoption at the Boone County Animal Shelter are what we term as ”random source“ which means we accept unwanted animals with limited or no history. It is important that you are aware that although we have checked the animals for symptoms of disease and behavior problems we cannot be certain that they are free of such problems. They could be incubating a disease or develop an inherited problem or behavior. We want you to be aware of such possibilities.
There are several things to consider when you are thinking about adding a pet to your household. All the adults in your home should discuss the adoption of a new pet. You must consider your financial obligation. You may have to spend a minimum of $400 to $500 per year on your new pet.
You may have noticed by now that we take adopting an animal very seriously. Adopting a pet is for life. Some animals can live up to 20 years or more and it is a very big commitment. This pet will depend on you for its food, water, shelter, medical attention and companionship. We are the Boone County Animal Shelter see the results of animal neglect and irresponsibility daily.
The animals available are evaluated for health and temperament problems. Each dog and cat will be vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and spayed or neutered. If the pet is too young or has a medical condition that delays the surgery, adopters will receive a voucher to reduce the cost of the operation. You will also receive a list of participating veterinarians who will provide a free check–up. All dogs are issued a Kentucky State Dog License. By law, any dog or cat adopted from the Boone County Animal Shelter must be spayed or neutered.
