Rainbow Trout in Camp Ernst Lake

Burlington, KY – Boone County Parks & Recreation Department and the Fishing in Neighborhoods Program through the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife are excited to announce the stocking of 1250 Rainbow Trout in Camp Ernst Lake in Burlington, KY.  The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources created the Fishing in Neighborhoods (FINs) program in 2006.  The goal of the program is to create quality fishing opportunities near cities of all sizes throughout the state.  Through the FINs program, lakes are regularly stocked with Catfish and Rainbow Trout at various times throughout the year.  The FINs program is a cooperative agreement between The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and the Boone County Fiscal Court.  Click here for info about Camp Ernst Lake.

Snow Emergencies in Boone County

Burlington, KY – During snow season residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the three levels of snow emergencies.  Snow emergencies are declared by the Judge/Executive under the advice of the Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management Departments.  During snow emergencies where snowfall is two inches or greater, it is required that vehicles parked on the street be moved from the street to allow trucks to safely and effectively treat and/or plow the streets.  Click on this link for information about snow emergencies in Boone County.

Public meetings planned for KY Transportation Projects in Boone

Burlington, KY – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced several public meetings in the coming months for road projects that are underway in Boone County. The public is invited to comment during these meetings which will all happen at Florence Baptist Church (642 Mt. Zion Road, Florence) in the “Commons Area.” The meetings are being held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the following road projects: KY 536 (Mt. Zion Road) Widening, November 1; I-75 / KY 338 (Richwood Road) Interchange Reconstruction , November 29; and I-75 / KY 536 (Mt. Zion Road) Interchange Reconstruction, January (date to be announced). Household Hazardous Waste Collection, Sat Nov 3, 9 am – 2 pm at Florence Freedom

Burlington, KY – On Saturday, Nov 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Florence Freedom Ballpark, the NKY Solid Waste Management and the NKY Household Hazardous Waste Action Coalition are helping NKY residents properly dispose of unwanted items. Burlington, KY –The ribbon cutting ceremony for Aero Parkway and Ted Bushelman Boulevard will take place on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the intersection of Aero Parkway and Burlington Pike (KY-18). This intersection is directly across from the new alignment with Oakbrook Road off Burlington Pike (KY-18). Parking will be available on the new Aero Parkway for guests and members of the media.

Fall Cleanup – October 15 – 21

Burlington, KY – Boone County Public Works Solid Waste Department is offering free disposal of junk, garbage and bagged litter between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. from October 15 through October 21st. Residents can bring items to the Boone County Public Works Yard (5645 Idlewild Road, Burlington) or visit the Union Pool (10165 Old Union Road, Union). Unacceptable items include anything from commercial entities. Liquid waste, hazardous waste, paint, dirt and concrete are also not being accepted. Residents are limited to 4 tires. Touch–A–Highway Event, Saturday September 29

Burlington, KY – Boone County Fiscal Court invites the public to “Touch a Highway” on Saturday, September 29 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the South Airfield Road Project.  Come out and inspect firsthand the County’s new 2.7 mile long road and multi–use path that will be open later this fall.  Residents are encouraged to bring a bicycle, stroller, roller blades or running shoes and stroll, bike or run on the new road!  The road will not be open to vehicular traffic until early October.  For more information, click here.

Parking Ordinance in Effect

Burlington, KY –The Boone County Fiscal Court passed during the regular meeting on January 10, 2012 a revised parking ordinance in response to requests from both citizens as well as the Boone County Sheriff's Office. This Ordinance provides specific regulations regarding parked vehicles in Boone County. The Boone County Sheriff's Office is in the process of enforcing this ordinance and will begin issuing parking tickets soon in response to citizen complaints. Burn Ban in Effect

Burlington, KY –During the months of May, June, July, August and September, open burning activities are restricted. Click here to view the list of allowed fires during these months. Regardless if you fall within the criteria of allowable fires, please call your local Fire Department before setting any fires. Unfortunately some citizens choose to burn their garbage rather than properly dispose of it. This is both illegal and hazardous to the environment as well as public health. Boone County Conservation District Celebrates 70 years

BOONE LIFTING BURNING BAN

Burlington, KY – Boone County Judge/Executive Gary W. Moore has signed an Executive Order lifting the ban on open burning. Judge/Executive Moore cited the recent precipitation and cooler temperatures which have decreased the fire danger. Mark Ihrig, Director of Boone County Emergency Management explained that he recommended the burn ban be lifted after consulting with the Boone County Fire Chiefs Association. Those who intend to conduct open burning are reminded that the provisions of Kentucky Administrative Regulation 401 KAR 63:005 are in effect until October 1. The open burning provisions of the Boone County Code of Ordinances remain in effect as well.

Burlington, KY–Tickets for the 2012 Senior Picnic sold out in record time this year. On Monday, August 6, the 1,000 tickets for the September 12th picnic sold out by 3 p.m. To be added to the waiting list, please contact Beverly Looney at 859-334-2100. Public Works will accept storm debris until Friday

Burlington, KY–Boone County Public Works Solid Waste Department is accepting debris from the storms that recently passed through our county. Debris can be dropped off at the Boone County Public Works yard located at 5645 Idlewild Road, Burlington, KY from 8 a.m. till 3:30 p.m. until Friday August 10. Acceptable items include tree limbs and other natural debris from the storm. Consult the Northern Kentucky Solid Waste Resource Guide for information about disposing of other items.

Burn Ban Executive Order

Burlington, KY–The National Weather Service has issued a notice regarding an elevated fire danger for June 27, 2012 and a fire weather watch for June 28, 2012. As a result, Judge/Executive Gary W. Moore signed an executive order notifying residents of the local burn ban being enacted. The local open burning ban is in addition to the current State EPA burning restrictions, but unlike the State EPA burning ban, it can be enforced by local sworn law enforcement officers. An exception of the Executive Order is the use of legal fireworks in accordance with all applicable local ordinances and statute laws. Click here to read the executive order.

Turfway Road Closed from June 24 to July 24

Burlington, KY–As part of the South Airfield Road project, Turfway Road (KY 1017) between O’Hara Lane and Thoroughbred Boulevard in Florence will be closed beginning at 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 24th. Businesses located along Turfway Road will remain open and motorists are advised to follow marked detour routes.  Turfway Road is anticipated to be re–opened on July 24th.  Access to Steve’s Car and Truck Repair and On–Site Trailer Repair will be maintained during the road closure.  Click here to view a map of the detour route.

Online Mapping Service available from Planning Commission

Burlington, KY– The Boone County Planning Commission provides an online mapping service called Boone County Base Mapping. This mapping website uses several layers to help users learn more about Boone County. Layers in Boone Base include: Subdivisions, Zoning Boundaries, Zip Codes, Forested Areas, Floodplains, 10ft. Contours, 2ft. Contours, Future Land Use, and 2009 Color Aerials. Burlington, KY– The Boone County Parks Department is currently accepting reservations for shelters. The shelters are available from April through October for $35. Burlington, KY– The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet wants to notify the traveling public, residents and local businesses that KY 237 (Pleasant Valley Road) will be closed to through traffic between Quiet Creek Drive and Old Toll Road, beginning at 12:01 AM Saturday morning, February 18, 2012 until 12:01 AM Monday morning February 20, 2012. Boone County and Florence recycling Christmas trees

Burlington, KY–Boone County and Florence are teaming up to recycle Christmas trees. Boone County Public Works and Florence Public Services will run their snow routes and collect trees left at the curb between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4. If there is a snow event, workers will clear snow before collecting trees. Residents can also drop their trees by Saturday, Jan. 7, at locations throughout Boone County. Animal Shelter "Home For The Holidays" event on Friday, Dec 16

Burlington, KY–The Boone County Animal Shelter will kick off the "Home For The Holidays" campaign with an open house on Friday, December 16th from noon to 8 pm at the Shelter (5643 Idlewild Road, Burlington). The event will feature discounts on adoption fees and other incentives to encourage adoption during the holidays. The Animal Shelter has added several new incentives this year to so that all animals leave the shelter to adoptive homes before the end of the year. From December 16-22, families adopting cats and dogs will be able to name their own adoption fee. Those adopting December 20-22 can request that their animals be held by the shelter for delivery on Christmas Eve. For a nominal fee, arrangements have been made for Santa to deliver the new four-legged family member to his adoptive home with the help of the Shelter elves in the Adoption Waggin'. North Bend Road Resurfacing Project Update

Burlington, KY–The Kentucky Department of Highways issued this information earlier today. The state has a major pavement repair project in progress on KY 237 (North Bend Road) in Boone County. Work began in August on the $5.4 million project, which is centered on the heavily traveled corridor between KY 18 (Burlington Pike) and Medical Arts Drive. Crews have removed deteriorated concrete pavement and are replacing it with asphalt. Motorists need to be aware that the current driving surface is the asphalt base, not the finished surface. The asphalt base makes for a somewhat bumpy ride. The final asphalt surface will be noticeably smoother. The project is on target to be complete by summer 2012.

Bridge Maintenance on Mt. Zion Road (KY 536) this week

BURLINGTON– On Thursday October 13, 2011, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 will be conducting a bridge maintenance project on Mt. Zion Road (KY 536) over Gunpowder Creek in Boone County. Crews will be working from 8 am – 5:00 pm. Traffic will be reduced to one lane. Flaggers will be in place. Motorist should look for lane closures and equipment.

KY Transportation Cabinet announced KY 8 (River Road) closed for slide repair

BURLINGTON– Weather permitting on September 28, 2011 – KY 8 will be closed to thru traffic in between the 2.3 – 2.5 mile marker for a slide repair. This section of KY 8 is just East of KY 237. Motorists should use KY 2846 (Tanner Road) and KY 237 (North Bend Road) as a detour. The repair project is anticipated to be complete by the end of October, 2011.

Community Emergency Response Team Training this fall

BURLINGTON– The Boone County Citizen Corps Council and Boone County Emergency Management Department will conduct a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training Course later this fall. This training is designed to help citizens of Boone County protect themselves, their families, and their neighborhoods during emergency situations that may overwhelm conventional emergency resources. CERT Training is open only to Boone County residents 18 years of age or older. The training is provided free of charge. You must attend all five sessions to complete the training and receive a certificate. Class size is limited to 25 persons and registrations will be taken on a first come first served basis. BURLINGTON– At a recent Boone County Fiscal Court meeting, a snapshot of the County's financial position at the end of Fiscal Year 2011 was delivered by County Administrator Jeff Earlywine and County Treasurer Lisa Buerkley. Judge/Executive Gary Moore offered his observations in a column detailing the county's strong financial position. South Airfield Road Project Update

BURLINGTON–A groundbreaking ceremony for this project took place in May. This project is being administered by the Boone County Fiscal Court with federal and local dollars. Construction is underway and the contract calls for this project to be finished by late 2012. The road will connect Burlington Pike (KY-18) to Turfway Road with additional connections to Zig Zag Road and Houston Road in Florence. Modified Reapportionment Plan Second Reading on August 9

BURLINGTON–At the Wednesday, July 27, 2011 meeting, the Boone County Fiscal Court read for the first time an ordinance regarding the modified report of the reapportionment committee establishing the boundary lines of the county commissioner districts. This is pursuant to the requirements of KRS 67.045 which requires that the commissioner's districts be re–evaluated with every census. This item will be considered for second reading and final action at the Tuesday, August 9, 2011 meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the Fiscal Courtroom on the first floor of the Boone County Administration Building (2950 Washington Street, Burlington). Boone County Senior Citizen Picnic Tickets Available August 1st

BURLINGTON–The Boone County Senior Citizen Picnic will take place on Wednesday, September 14th. Tickets will be available in the Judge/Executive’s Office, on the Second Floor of the County Administration Building (2950 Washington Street, Burlington), beginning Monday, August 1st from 8:30 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. To attend the picnic, you must purchase a ticket, be 55 years of age or older and a Boone County resident. No tickets will be sold at the gate on the day of the event. There are 1,000 tickets available at a cost of $6.00 each and they sell out quickly each year. Union Pool Reopened

BURLINGTON–After an inspection by the Northern Kentucky Health Department, the Union Pool was reopened today. The Health Department had informed the Boone County Parks and Recreation Department that a patron who visited the pool on June 7th had been diagnosed with Shigella, a bacteria that infects the bowels. As a precaution, the pool was closed. After sufficiently treating the pool with chlorine, the pool passed inspection and was reopened. BURLINGTON–Home based businesses and self–employed individuals in Boone County are required to have an Occupational License per Boone County Ordinance 07–27. To help answer frequently asked questions, the Boone County Planning Commission has created a document explaining how to start or expand your business in Boone County available here. Burlington resident advances in Pitch, Hit and Run

BURLINGTON–Boone County Parks & Recreation Department is proud to announce that Kaitlyn Becknell from Burlington, KY won the Pitch Hit and Run, Cincinnati Reds Team Championship at Great American Ballpark last Saturday for her age group. Pitch, Hit & Run is a program sponsored by Aquafina Major League Baseball. Pitch, Hit & Run (PHR) is an exciting skills competition that provides both boys and girls the opportunity to advance through four levels of competition, including Team Championship events at all 30 Major League ballparks and the National Finals at the MLB All-Star Game. Kaitlyn competed against participants from Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio who live in the Cincinnati Reds Market. She is now in the running to compete at the all star game in Phoenix in July.

Freeroader Program aims to identify Kentuckians beating the system

BURLINGTON–Thousands of Kentuckians are beating the system through the improper use in Kentucky of motor vehicles bearing out-of-state license plates or improper use of temporary tags. If you observe a Kentucky resident operating motor vehicles on Kentucky highways for more than 15 days with out-of-state license plates or for more than 30 days with temporary tags, please help the Department of Revenue identify these Freeroaders. South Airfield Road Groundbreaking on Wednesday, May 18 at 1:30 p.m.

BURLINGTON–The Boone County Fiscal Court is pleased to announce the official groundbreaking for the South Airfield Road Project will occur on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. along KY-18 East of Oakbrook Drive. This Boone County Fiscal Court project is funded in part through an appropriation secured by Congressman Geoff Davis. Project development and design have been funded through local sources. The cost of construction, estimated at $13 million, will be funded primarily through federal dollars. Total project investment is estimated at $18 million. For more information, click here.

In the event that you see an animal in an area where it doesn't belong, feel free to contact the shelter. Tire Amnesty runs May 4 – May 7 in Boone

Burlington – Beginning on Wednesday May 4, the Northern Kentucky Solid Waste Management Area and the Kentucky Division of Waste Management are jointly sponsoring a tire amnesty program to allow Kentucky residents free disposal of an unlimited number of tires on or off the rims. In Boone County, the tires can be dropped off at the Public Works Yard (5645 Idlewild Road, Burlington) or at Bavarian Waste (12764 McCoys Fork Road, Walton, KY). These items WILL NOT be accepted: foam filled tires, off‐road construction equipment tires and solid tires with press–on rims. We will not accept tires from retailers. BURLINGTON–The annual Spring Cleanup will take place from April 25 to May 1 at two locations in Boone County between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring their junk for FREE disposal. Liquid waste, hazardous waste, paint, dirt and concrete will NOT be accepted. Also, any refuse from businesses will NOT be accepted. The limit of tires per load is four. Emerald Ash Borer Citizen Hands-On Monitoring Workshop, Wed Apr 27

BURLINGTON–Learn what federal, state, and local officials are doing to monitor the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). Be part of a volunteer team to view its movement in Boone County. This workshop will involve identifying where EAB has been found in Boone County, equipping volunteers with tools and knowledge to identify and assess conditions of ash trees in Boone, and set up a structure to yearly monitor locations to determine if EAB population is increasing in Boone. KY Transportation Cabinet Maintenance Schedule April 11 – April 15

BURLINGTON–The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 Superintendent Jason Braun announced the following maintenance activities in Boone County for the week April 11 – April 15th: Crews will continue to patch and repair potholes on KY 237 from Gateway Blvd. to Medical Arts Drive (8 – 10 mile markers). Boone County Street Sweep nets 1,800 bags of trash, 36 tires

BURLINGTON–The Boone County Jail Work Camp Crews and the Boone County Public Works staff along with the Boone County Parks Department collected 1,823 bags of trash and 36 tires along 112 miles of roads throughout the county during a two week blitz in March. This is an ongoing effort that has taken place annually since the spring of 1988. By using inmate labor, the county was able to save taxpayers $37,000 and improve the cleanliness of our community. The unfunded mandate from the Environmental Protection Agency delivered through a Federal Court Order has forced the SD1 board to increase rates by 15% per year for the next two years. Public Works is responsible for maintaining county roads but not state or city roads. State roads are identified by a number such as KY-18 (Burlington Pike) or KY-237 (North Bend Road). 2010 Comprehensive Plan Goals and Objectives being considered on March 22

BURLINGTON–First reading of the Goals and Objectives for the 2010 Boone County Comprehensive Plan occurred at the Fiscal Court Meeting on February 8, 2011. Second reading took place at the March 7th meeting. During the meeting Fiscal Court members voted to postpone final approval to continue reviewing the goals and objectives. The Goals and Objectives will again be considered on March 22nd at 5:30 p.m. in the Fiscal Court Room on the first floor of the Boone County Administration Building (2950 Washington Street, Burlington). After approval by the legislative units in Boone County, the Planning Commission will begin drafting the Chapters of the Plan itself.
