COUNTY BURIAL RULES AND REGULATIONS
The Boone County Fiscal Court is responsible for the burial of persons who die within Boone County, who have no family or next of kin who can be located, and have no funds, assets or property which can be sold or borrowed against to pay for the burial.
Next of kin are legally responsible for the burial of the deceased. If assets are later identified which were available at the time of death, Boone County Fiscal Court has the right to recover costs of a normal burial from the next of kin.
If family members are located who are totally indigent and unable to accept responsibility for burial costs, the next of kin then must agree to accept all policies of Boone County Fiscal Court in relation to pauper burials. In addition, the remains of the deceased must be officially relinquished to Boone County for disposition.
County burial includes embalming, casket, transportation to cemetery, outer burial container, and interment in the pauper section at Burlington Cemetery. Cremation services are available if authorized by the next of kin. No visitation, grave marker or additional services at the funeral home or Burlington Cemetery are included.
