Crash Analysis

Traffic crashes in Boone County were examined for the three-period from January 1, 2001 through December 31, 2003. Computer summaries of reported crashes were obtained from the Kentucky State Police. During that period, there were a total of 13,453 crashes on Boone County streets and roads that were reported by law enforcement agencies. This included 36 fatal crashes in which a total of 45 persons were killed. [Click here] for a map of the fatal crash locations in Boone County from 2001 through 2003. Crash Rates

Crash rates were calculated for roadway segments and for intersections. This makes it possible to compare roads having different traffic volumes; that is, a road that might seem to experience a high occurrence of crashes actually might be typical when compared to similar roads in Kentucky, based on the number of vehicles per day that it carries.

Crash rates for roadway sections and segments are expressed in terms of annual crashes per 100 million vehicle-miles traveled. For intersections and very short highway sections (“spots”), the rate is expressed in terms of annual crashes per 100 million vehicles that pass that particular spot.

Critical Crash Rate

Critical crash rates were determined for study area roads and intersections in the county. The Critical Crash Rate is a statistically derived number, greater than the average rate, which serves as a screening measure to identify locations where crash occurrence is higher than should be expected for a given facility type and for which safety measures should be considered.
